This is an extremely simple pattern and is great for a first crochet project. Since this pattern is aimed at beginners, the pattern is written out in plain English-- no confusing abbreviations!
Let's get started! To make this hat, you'll need to know how to make a crochet chain, half double crochet stitch and how to decrease.
Materials:
1 skein bulky weight yarnsize J hook
Yarn needle for finishing
Gauge:
10 stitches = 3 inches7 rows = 3 inches
Directions:
- Chain 30 stitches
- Join beginning chain to first chain to create a round and place a marker.
- Row 1: Work a half double crochet in each chain all around
- Row 2-8: Work a half double crochet in each half double crochet around for rows 2-8.
- Row 9: Now we will start our hat decreases (the fun part!) Half double crochet for 3 stitches, and then decrease over the next two stitches. Repeat this for the entire round. Once this round is finished, there will be 24 stitches remaining.
- Row 10: Half double crochet for 2 stitches, and then decrease over the next two stitches. Repeat this for the entire round. Once this round is finished, there will be 18 stitches remaining.
- Row 11: Half double crochet for 1 stitches, and then decrease over the next two stitches. Repeat this for the entire round. Once this round is finished, there will be 12 stitches remaining.
- Row 12: For this round, decrease over each set of 2 stitches. Once this round is finished, there will be 6 stitches remaining.
- Using a yarn needle, stitch the hole at the top of the hat closed. Weave in the yarn tails.
- Your hat is done! Leave as is or add a few extras like pom poms (check out my pom pom tutorial), flowers, or ears. I added two pom poms at the top of the hat.
I wish I had a few pictures of the hat on an actual baby, but Pooh will have to substitute.

Im a bit confused with the decreasing "over the next 2 stitches". Are we supposed to skipp a stitch?
ReplyDeleteYou'll need to work a decrease-- turn 2 stitches into 1, for those next two stitches. I hope that helps! You can find some great resources for crochet decreases on the net!
