The First Day Dress

Deep breath. My baby is in school!!!!!!!!

If you've followed this blog, you'll know that I my daughter and I butt heads about clothing all the time. I was surprised when she asked me to make a dress for her the night before her first day of school! Pink, of course. Luckily I had a half made dress at the ready.

When Dana asked me about testing the First Day Dress, I jumped at the chance for just one reason. I wanted to figure how she lined the sleeves so perfectly in her version of the dress. It's been driving me crazy for months, and I just couldn't wait one more minute to find out how she did it. But the testing just happened to coincide with a trip to New York, so I quickly made the bodice portion the day before I left.

You're wondering too now, aren't you?
So when Amaani asked, I just had to slap on the skirt to make a brand new dress.

It's made in a pink floral print, has a pink button, and is lined with pink broadcloth. She loves it! (And so do I.)

It turned out that I didn't have enough to make the entire circle skirt portion of the dress, so I cut a little of the back of the skirt straight, and gathered just that portion. It creates just a little bit of a bustle effect and gives the skirt just the right amount of twirl.

I love this pattern. I love how the longer line of the bodice and the non gathered skirt makes the whole dress look so grown up. I love the instructions-- Dana makes you feel that you are sewing with a friend. The construction is clever, and I already have a lined sleeved version of the dress on my cutting table.

Doesn't she look so grown up?

And for you all wondering how her first day went....

It was fantastic!

If you are making one of these-- consider ordering from our sponsor Raspberry Creek. They aren't just a quilt shop! They also have a selection of modern knits and apparel fabric. I love this modern art gallery print... but alas; it's not pink.

What a sweet little dress! Being a buttons addict I appreciated the cool button on the back closure :)

I love it! When my granddaughters were born, 13 and 11 years ago, I was so excited to make little girl dresses. When my daughter was little, I made all of her clothes and mine as well. Money was, well, tight, so it was as much a necessity as a pleasure, but I loved it. My granddaughters did not want my hand made creations, however. So I never made much for them. :-(

Such a beautiful dress and little girl. Like the other grandmother, the granddaughter wants nothing homemade. A sign of the times I guess.
Adorable! The dress AND the daughter!
Who is cuter, the dress or the daughter - both are adorable.
Lovely :-)
WOW, I can not believe it. She looks very happy and proud of her mom.
all grown up!!! :)
She looks so happy! How wonderful!! The dress is beautiful and made prettier by how I can she feels wearing it. I'm glad she had a great first day!

The dress that you designed for your sweet little baby is so cute and I’m mostly impressed with the floral pattern that you choose for making that dress. She is truly looking like a princess after wearing that outfit plus the color combination of the button on that red dress is also cool.

What an equally beautiful dress for an equally awesome child. Children always look nice whatever they wear especially if they are cute and lovely. fabulousafter40.com/style-over-40-would-you-wear-a-jumpsuit/
