I've always made Rakhi's from embroidery floss (like in the Make Your Own Rakhi tutorial). This year though, we were blessed with a brand new nephew who will be just over a month old when Rakhi. He is unbelievably tiny and cute, as all newborns are. We will be mailing him a Rakhi (from my daughter), and I wanted him to have the softest, comfiest Rakhi ever made.
This is what I came up with. Rakhi's or bracelets made from knit fabric! These are bracelets your kids will love to make and wear.
This is also a perfect craft to do for Create With Kids month-- since there aren't any tools to use at all once the fabric is cut.
First, find a soft jersey knit. You can use a t-shirt or knit scraps for this. I went to the store and asked for 2 inches of this super soft jersey knit rayon. Since you are buying such a tiny amount, this project costs less than a dollar.
Cut your jersey into 1 inch strips, about 3 times the length of the intended wrist. And don't forget, when in doubt, go long!
Now you are ready to grab your kids and get to work! Have them grab both ends of the strip and give it a good tug. Like magic, the ends of the knit will curl in on each other.
Make a slip knot on one end of your 'string'.
Using your fingers, push a loop of string right up through your slip knot.
You have your first chain/braid! Keep doing this until you run out of string or patience. :) Personally, I think the braclets look just fine only partially braided.
The result is a 'braid' look-- done without any actual braiding.
In the interest of full disclosure, I will admit that my 2 yo daughter wasn't able to make these on her own. She did help me shop for the fabric and make the 'string'. We had so much fun together, and she's so proud! I do think a slightly older child could make these easily.
Give it a try--either for Rakhi, or just for a fun quality time project with your child. If you do make one, leave a comment below! I'd love to see it!
We'll be trying this with my four and a half year old son for his "special" friends at pre K! I'll let you know how it goes!
