A Sewing Tool That Will Surprise You!

Ok... Maybe I need to work on my titles. But my husband really was surprised that this worked!
Sewing Quick Tip: Get Rid of Stray Threads With a Toilet Brush

My sewing room is carpeted, which means little bits and pieces of everything I make get all over the carpet. For a long time, I use to just vaccum them up. Eventually the threads would wrap around the brushes of the vacuum cause the vaccum to stop working.

Vacuum fixing falls squarely in my husband's household duties, so he'd have to pick out all those threads. Not fun. After the third (or fifth?) time, it became clear that I needed to figure out another way.

Enter our hero: The Toilet Wand! Click to read how to use one to pick up stray threads!

Sewing Quick Tip: Get Rid of Stray Threads With a Toilet Brush

I bought this amazing toilet brush from walmart for 1.99 and made sure that everyone in the house knew that it wasn't for toilet use. The fact that it's bent makes it that much easier to use.

Just sort of sweep it across the carpet and it will corral all the stray threads, serger trimmings and bits of fluff of off the floor.

Then those little bits are easy to pick up and throw away. It even picks up pins that have disappeared into the carpet.

I store mine under the ironing board (where I trim threads while pressing) and do a quick sweep of the area before vacuuming. This has to be my vaccum's favorite sewing tip! (and my husband's, for that matter!)

Let me know if you give it a try!

    1. Thanks you guys! I'm still crossing my fingers for a fancy sewing room with hardwood flooring, though. :)

  2. What a great ideal. Bet you could use it on a quilt as well to pick up the stray threads. My quilt room floor is vinyl but I applique in the living room and it is carpeted.

  3. I thought I was the only one who used a toilet brush on my carpeted sewing room!! Mine is a commercial grade carpet, so sometimes I sweep it with a regular broom, too. It's pink so I remember it is ONLY for my sewing room!! After sweeping, I can vacuum much easier!

  4. It is even good for hard flooring, too. It keeps all that thread from getting wound around the vacuum cleaner roller.
